Chen Mingquan, a native of Shangqiu, Henan, is a member of the Communist Party of China and known by his artistic name “Mohai.” He was born in 1955 and currently serves as the Deputy Secretary-General of the Central Media Culture Association, Vice Chairman of the International Cultural Exchange and Art Committee of China National Radio, Vice Chairman of the National Painting and Calligraphy Art Committee, and Vice Chairman of the Chinese Calligraphers and Painters Association. Chen is recognized as a National Gift Artist of China, a Chinese State Guest Artist, a senior calligrapher accredited by the Ministry of Culture, and an inheritor of China’s intangible cultural heritage. He is also the project leader for regular script at the China Academy of Management Science, Chairman of the Jury for the Asian International Youth Film Festival, First Deputy Secretary-General and expert of the Chinese Calligraphy and Couplets Art Research Association, Artistic Director of China Satellite TV, and a director of the Chinese Cultural Industry Association. Additionally, he serves as the Cultural Ambassador for the China Central Radio and Television Culture and Tourism Exchange Development Center, a director of the World Chinese Artists Association, and the Executive President of its Henan branch.
Chen is the Vice President of the Chinese Century Collection Painting and Calligraphy Academy and a professional calligrapher for the China Buddhist Development Promotion Association. He also holds the position of Vice Chairman of the Asian Calligraphers Association. With over 40 years of experience in creation, study, and practice, he has been mentored by famous artists such as Yang Shuhua and Ma Long. In 2013, his work The Sea Accepts All Rivers was collected by the Great Hall of the People and Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. His calligraphy was awarded first prize and the Excellent Creation Award in the Chinese Cultural Industry Development Promotion Association’s Calligraphy Competition.
In 2015, in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Anti-Japanese War, 16 of his works were selected by China Post for the release of stamps, postal albums, and postcards, which were distributed worldwide. In celebration of the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, five sets of his works were also selected by China Post for nationwide issuance as stamps. In December 2017, the Beijing Heritage Art Protection and Development Center named him as a third-generation inheritor of intangible cultural heritage. From 2016 to 2018, he was consecutively recommended as a powerful artist in Chinese brand influence. On June 15, 2018, at the New Era · Beautiful China Art Exchange Conference, he received an Excellence Award and the Outstanding Contribution Award for Cultural Art Exchange in China. On October 28, 2018, his work A Sharp Sword is Forged Through Hard Work, the Fragrance of Plum Blossoms Comes From Bitter Cold was selected to participate in the “New Journey—Celebrating 40 Years of Reform and Opening-Up Contemporary Art Exhibition” at the Museum of Overseas Chinese History. His work fully showcased the beauty and cultural richness of China, receiving high praise from experts and the public.
On June 18, 2019, he was invited to attend the 19th Annual China Century Collection Person of the Year Awards Ceremony and was honored with the title of “Famous Master of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Heritage.” On July 29, 2019, he appeared on Hainan TV for the special program “Singing for the 70th National Day” and created the calligraphy work The Purple Qi Comes from the East live, which was collected by the organizing committee. On August 28, 2020, he was invited to the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the China Century Collection and was awarded the honorary title of “Contemporary Chinese Calligraphy Leader.” At the end of May 2023, he was featured on the program Cultural Power at the Central Television Tower. In March 2024, he was invited for a classic interview on the CCTV program Artists’ Profiles. His work in regular script won the Olympic Gold Award during the Olympics, and in September of the same year, his works were added to Baidu Encyclopedia. The Shangqiu Municipal Bureau for Retired Cadres named Chen Mingquan as a “Star Artist,” and in early October, he was awarded the honorary title of “International Peace Artist,” which was covered by international media.
As one of China’s powerful contemporary painters and calligraphers, Chen has deeply studied traditional methods and continues to hone his craft. His works, which have been exhibited abroad over a hundred times, hold significant artistic and collectible value, and are highly sought after by collectors both domestically and internationally.
